Event Recap: On Thursday, October 27th, Region 2 held a region wide meeting with a focus on innovations being implemented by the Florida Department of Transportation in District 2. The meeting was held at the Depot, which was a unique, casual park setting in Gainesville, so that the meeting was centrally located within the Region. The location was set in a restored historic railroad station that has been converted into an open-air pavilion style facility. This unique setting created an interactive atmosphere that led to a great networking opportunity for our attendees. Attendees had the opportunity to view expert presentations put forth by the accomplished Florida Department of Transportation experts. These presentations touched on an array of innovative programs and initiatives currently implemented by FDOT. The meeting began with Mr. Travis Humphries, D2 Director of Operations, highlighting the efforts of FDOT District 2 personnel in the restoration efforts from the impacts of Hurricane Ian. The presentation not only highlighted the innovative approach in quickly restoring roadways and facilities, but the dedication and resolve of “One FDOT” in action making a positive difference. Our array of speakers included Mr. Pete Vega, D2 TSM&O Program Manager, who presented on “Safety Initiative and Technological Solutions”; Mrs. Ashley Anderson, State Construction Final Estimates Engineer, presented on “Applications of 3D Modeling and Rover Technology in Construction”; and then followed by Mr. Jamie Green, State Materials Pavement Research Engineer, presenting on “Innovation in Materials.” The program adjourned with a group presentation from Mr. Travis Humphries, Mr. Jamie Driggers, District 2 Planning and Environmental Management Administrator, and Mr. Larry Parks, Director of Transportation Development, with a presentation on “Work Program Initiatives in a Unique Environment”. Each presentation highlighted the unique initiatives and solutions being utilized by FDOT in District 2 from design through construction and allowed the audience to interact with questions and discussions. The event ended with a “Meet the Speaker” social which allowed a networking opportunity for everyone at the event. ACEC Florida and FES Region 2 would like to thank FDOT, especially the speakers for their time and partnership in presenting at this important regional meeting. We would also like to thank our sponsors for their assistance in making this a successful event. Each Presentation can be accessed below on the embedded links in each presentation title.
