Session I: Performance Evaluation of Flooded Pavement Infrastructure with Use of a Falling Weight Deflectometer (1 PDH)		4/6/2023	4/6/2023	8:45 AM	9:45 AM	4/6/2023 8:45 AM - 9:45 AM Presenter: Geoffrey Rowe, PE, CEng, PhD \| Abatech Inc. & Christopher De la Cruz, EIT \| Ardaman The performance of pavements infrastructure depends on a soundfoundation upon which the pavement rests. The stiffness provided bycertain granular and bound bases can vary considerably with waterintrusion, which can also result in localized wash out of basematerials and be more prevalent around structures, culverts, pipes,bridges, etc. Methods exist for rapid testing of pavements to assessthe foundation issues in terms of stiffness of support. Stiffness isgenerally related to the outer geophones of an FWD and voids can bedetected via defl ection versus stress level analysis. The use of theFWD defl ection data combined with information from GPS information enable risk assessment.

Driven piles, auger-cast piles, and drilled shafts are typically utilizedas deep foundations. They derive their support from geotechnicalresistance and structural strength. This presentation discussesmethods (e.g., various tests, extraction, coring) for structural integrityassessments. Basic principles, capabilities, limitations andapplication of commonly used test methods are presented andillustrated with data from actual projects where damage wasconfi rmed by concrete and steel driven piles and auger-cast pileextractions or by coring of shafts. High-strain, low-strain, cross-holesonic logging, and thermal integrity profi ling testing methods arediscussed and demonstrated.

Session III: Less Approach to Applied Mechnical Stabilization (LAAMS) for Unpaved Roads (1 PDH)		4/6/2023	4/6/2023	1:45 PM	2:45 PM	4/6/2023 1:45 PM - 2:45 PM Presenter: David Fuqua, PE \| Tensar Over the last 5 decades, various methodologies have been employedfor the design of mechanically stabilized unpaved roads. Thecurrently accepted design methodology for unpaved roads, theGiroud-Han methodology, was adopted by the FHWA in 2008. Thisdesign methodology utilizes a limit equilibrium bearing capacityanalysis procedure. As an improvement to the Giroud-Han method, the Lees Approach toApplied Mechanical Stabilization (aka: LAAMS method) has recentlybeen introduced. The new design methodology addressesdefi ciencies in existing design methods and is based on morerigorous geotechnical information.
Session IV: Engineering Evaluation Tools to Determine "What Caused the Cracks" (1 PDH)		4/6/2023	4/6/2023	3:00 PM	4:00 PM	4/6/2023 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM Presenter: Kurt Heinrichs, PE \| NOVA Engineering and Environmental, LLC Attendees will learn about the approach to forensic failure analysisand how the implementation of technology tools, testing, andmethods provides key data that will assist to determine the rootcause of the failure. Attendees will review the capabilities of the toolsand case studies using Ground Penetrating Radar, Ultrasonic PulseVelocity, Impact Echo, Bond Testing, Adhesive Anchor and Safety TieBack Testing, Core Sampling, Electronic Leak Detection, WaterInfi ltration Testing, Infrared, and Nuclear Surveys, Wind Uplift, RelativeHumidity, Moisture Content Testing, to assist in the determination ofthe failures root cause and in the development of the repair plan.
